San-Juan-Capistrano
is located in southern Orange County about 23 miles southeast of downtown Santa Ana. It is called the "Birthplace of Orange County," because it is here that the Franciscan missionaries founded the Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1776. Today the city has a population of over 36,000 residents. Nearly 40 percent of the land in San Juan Capistrano is open space and parkland and the picturesque town offers much to see and do; including a self-guided walking tour of the historic downtown district. There are many shops and restaurants to enjoy and both the Dana Point Harbor and San Clemente Pier are just a short drive away. A Farmer's Market is held each Wednesday, year round, in San Juan Capistrano and offers fresh produce, specialty foods and flowers. The Mission San Juan Capistrano is one of the major attractions in town - a monument to California's multi-cultural history that celebrates its Native American, Spanish, Mexican and European heritage. Inside the serene mission, visitors can walk down the paths amid ten acres of lush gardens and cool fountains. The old adobe walls of the mission offer visitors a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. The Mission is located on Ortega Highway west of Interstate 5. Other attractions in San Juan Capistrano include the two-month long Swallows Festival, which begins each year in late February, the Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park, Zoomars Petting Zoo & Bird Park and the Camino Real Playhouse.

The Southern Pacific coastline, between Los Angeles and San Diego, enjoys some of the most beautiful weather in the state year round. This region boasts over 300 days of sunshine per year, balmy days and cool evenings - perfect for beachcombing, tennis, golf and other outdoor activities. The rainy season runs November through early April, with dry conditions and low humidity the rest of the year. It's not unusual to go all summer with no precipitation at all. Low clouds and fog are usually present right along the coastline on warmer summer days, but clears up by early afternoon. The summer heat is moderated by cool ocean breezes, but keep in mind that as you travel inland away from the cooling effect of the ocean, the temperatures rise (although not to uncomfortable levels.) Thunderstorms in this area are infrequent and light.
