Palm Springs
is an oasis of blue and green in the Sonora Desert of southern California. Located 70 miles east of Los Angeles, Palm Springs sits at the foot of the 10,804-foot Mt. San Jacinto. When the East Coast of the U.S. is buried under snow and grey skies, it’s warm and sunny in Palm Springs. Lush palm trees, 109 emerald green golf courses, 30,000 sparkling blue pools dot the landscape around this city that is known as “the playground of the stars.” For things to do in Palm Springs, start with a glassed-in tramcar ride 8,000 feet up the mountain for a glorious view of the Coachella Valley. You can also drive up the mountain using the Palms to Pines Highway, stopping at the picturesque town of Idyllwild along the way. Once you arrive at the top, you can hike the trails on foot or mule back, or you can take a hot air balloon ride over the desert. Back in town, there are theaters and museums to enjoy, and fine dining at world class restaurants. Shop at upscale boutiques and art galleries, and take a bus tour to see the homes of the stars. Just outside of town, enjoy outdoor recreation at Joshua Tree National Park, or visit Indian Canyons and the Living Desert. The vast desert region of southern California east of Los Angeles has a typical desert climate. This area, which includes Palm Springs, Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage receives only 15-20 days of rainfall per year for a total of 4.77 inches. The days are mostly sunny and warm and nights are cool from fall through late spring. Summers turn hot to very hot, with occasional high clouds, and warm, balmy evenings May through October. The humidity levels are very low, so even when the mercury climbs to 100 degrees, it feels comfortable in the shade. Keep in mind that temperatures are 30-40 degrees lower at the top of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and in the Alpine community of Idyllwild.
