Markleeville
is the county seat of Alpine County, which is the least populated county in California. This is definitely the place to come if you're seeking High Mountain adventure, far removed from the city life. Markleeville is separated from the rest of California by the imposing Sierra Nevada Mountain range, close to the Nevada State border and near Lake Tahoe. Alpine County is known for its snow capped mountain peaks, high country meadows, beautiful forests and pristine lakes and streams. Markleeville is a small, friendly town with lots of character, set among some of the most awe-inspiring scenery the state has to offer. Near Bear Valley and Lake Alpine, Markleeville has it all - skiing and snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, parasailing, horseback riding and more! White water rafting and kayaking are available along 28 miles of the East Fork of the Carson River, which is a state designated "Wild & Scenic River." The high mountain country in Alpine County near Lake Tahoe enjoys a four-season climate. Located in the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains, summers are generally warm and dry with cool evenings and winters are quite cold and snowy. Moderate amounts of snow are reported each year in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, with amounts and intensities increasing at elevations around 6,000 to 8,000 feet. Above 4,000 feet snow remains on the ground for long periods of time each winter and up to 40 feet of snow can be reported in the Sierras. Summers are quite pleasant and warm with occasional rain or thunderstorms. Sometimes, after a prolonged hot spell, thunderstorms at the higher elevations may become severe. Most rain occurs November through March.
