Homewood
is a sleepy little town located on the forested western shore of Lake Tahoe, home to a well-known ski resort by the same name. Homewood is in the midst of both the El Dorado National Forest and Tahoe National Forest, and is situated between the towns of Sunnyside and Tahoma, near Tahoe City. If you imagine a vacation spot nestled amid towering firs and pines, with views of a magnificent lake, then Homewood is the place for you. It is near all the excitement of the casinos and live entertainment of South Lake Tahoe, but offers the tranquility and charm of "Old Tahoe." Outdoor summertime activities in Homewood include hiking, golf, tennis, boating, fishing, water-skiing, parasailing and rafting. In the wintertime, the Homewood Mountain Ski Center offers excellent groomed runs with spectacular views of Lake Tahoe. There are several other major ski resorts located just minutes from Homewood, such as Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. Other attractions in Homewood include a paintball playground, a summertime farmer's market and outdoor arts and craft fair, the High & Dry Marina, and a water ski school that offers lessons, as well as boat and jet ski rentals and boat charters.

A distinct four-season, alpine climate describes Lake Tahoe's weather. Located in the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains at the 7,000-foot level, summers are generally warm and dry with cool evenings and winters are quite cold and snowy. Moderate amounts of snow are reported each year in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, with amounts and intensities increasing at elevations around 6,000 to 8,000 feet. Above 4,000 feet snow remains on the ground for long periods of time each winter and up to 40 feet of snow can be reported in the Sierras. Highways are sometimes closed for periods of two to three days due to blowing and drifting snow. Summers are quite pleasant and mild with occasional rain or thunderstorms. Sometimes, after a prolonged hot spell, thunderstorms at the higher elevations may become severe.
