Indio
, nicknamed “City of Festivals,” plays hosts to several events throughout the year, including three Native American powwows, the International Tamale Festival, the Southwest Arts Festival and the National Date Festival. Located in the eastern end of southern California’s Coachella Valley near Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage, Indio is one of the sunniest places in the U.S., where rainfall is a rarity. It is within the Colorado Desert, and surrounded by the San Jacinto Mountains to the east and the Santa Rosa Mountains to the south. You will find golf, tennis, fine dining, shopping and exciting casino nightlife in Indio, plus the town is host to several sporting events such as the Skins Game and the Indio Desert Circuit – one of America’s largest horse shows. Indio is also a gateway to the Joshua Tree National Park, where the Colorado and Mojave Deserts merge to form some of the most unique geological displays on Earth. Other nearby attractions include the Salton Sea Recreation Area, which offers boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, camping, hiking and bird watching. Sculpture Land is a twenty-acre park with more than 200 large sculptures by artists from around the world. Picnic areas are available within the park. Indio is approximately 75 miles north of the California-Baja California Mexico border and 125 miles east of the center of Los Angeles.

The vast desert region of southern California east of Los Angeles has a typical desert climate. This area, which includes Palm Springs, Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage receives only 15-20 days of rainfall per year for a total of 4.77 inches. The days are mostly sunny and warm and nights are cool from fall through late spring. Summers turn hot to very hot, with occasional high clouds, and warm, balmy evenings May through October. The humidity levels are very low, so even when the mercury climbs to 100 degrees, it feels comfortable in the shade. Keep in mind that temperatures are 30-40 degrees lower at the top of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and in the Alpine community of Idyllwild.
