Venice was founded in 1900 by Abbot Kinney who wanted to model the area after Venice, Italy. He envisioned a city by the sea, complete with canals, gondolas, hotels, amusement park piers and Venetian-style buildings. For the most part, he succeeded, and Venice California has become unlike any other place in the country. This small beach community is located right next to Santa Monica, and only 15 minutes from Los Angeles International Airport. The city of Venice is known worldwide for its boardwalk and colorful pier, oceanfront hiking path and street entertainers. The “canals” built in the town proved not very practical for getting around the city, and today they are home to an upscale neighborhood of beautifully remodeled homes. The tolerant lifestyle in Venice attracts many artists to the area and the city hosts the annual “Venice Art Walk” each year. This event gives visitors a chance to look inside the homes and studios of the city’s artists. You will find small owner-operated restaurants and outdoor cafes in Venice, along with custom furniture, vintage clothing stores, and boutiques and art galleries. Lodging ranges from reasonably priced hotels to oceanfront inns and bed and breakfasts with fabulous views. This is a town where you can play on the beach, go surfing or swimming, rollerblade or hike the oceanfront path, explore the galleries and shops. Or, in Venice, you can do nothing at all but sit on the boardwalk and watch the parade of people pass by and you’ll have a good time.

Southern California along the Pacific Coast enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year. As with most of the state of California, summers are dry due to a semi-permanent high pressure system that sits in the Pacific Ocean and holds storm tracks well to the north. Warm air moving over the cool ocean in summer creates fog that moves in during the evening and early morning hours but almost always dissipates by midday. The rainy season is November through early April, but this area receives only approximately 12 inches of precipitation per year. Some flash flooding can occur when large amounts of rain occur in winter over a period of one or two days, and in summertime, very dry conditions in the higher elevations means forest fires are always a threat.
