Stinson-Beach
is located in Marin County, approximately 20 miles north of San Francisco along Highway 1. Getting to this small beach town is half the fun of visiting - narrow, steep Highway 1 curves around the mountainside as gigantic cliffs drop off into the Pacific Ocean on the other side. It's one of the most scenic drives in the United States and is definitely for the adventurous. Once here, the main attraction in this small seaside community is, of course, the beach itself. Three and a half miles of gorgeous sandy beach are available for swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing, surfing, hiking, kite flying and sea kayaking. Lifeguards are on duty May through October. Across from the beach, there is a 51-acre park with more than 100 picnic tables. A snack bar is available on the beach April through September. There are many beautiful rooms and cabins available for rent in and around Stinson Beach, as well as an excellent choice of restaurants. Stinson Beach is a perfect place to base your Bay Area vacation. It's secluded, yet near many other outstanding vacation spots, such as San Francisco, Point Reyes National Seashore and Lighthouse, Mt. Tamalpais State Park, and Muir Woods. The Northern Coast of California, including the areas of Stinson Beach, Mill Valley and Point Reyes Station, is a year-round destination, and its climate is as varied as the geography. Summers are mostly dry all over, with frequent low clouds and morning fog along the coast. Winters along the coast are generally mild. Rain occurs most frequently and heavily October-April, with January being the wettest month. The San Francisco Bay Area can be cool and damp in the summer (due to the fog,) which surprises many visitors. However, just a few miles inland the weather is very different with warmer temperatures and more sunshine. Cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean help keep summer from becoming too hot and winters from being too cold.
