Fairfax
is a small town of about 7,500 residents, located in Marin County, near the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco. Ideally situated near the city, but far enough away to be secluded from the crowds and traffic, Fairfax is said to be the last "suburb" before the "wilds of the San Geronimo Valley and beyond." Fairfax began as a ranching and farming community, but today consists of fine homes nestled in the hills and small valleys of the area, with easy access to several state and national recreation parks. At one time, Fairfax was the setting for many early Western movies, from about 1910 to 1923. The town of Fairfax today is generally recognized as the "birthplace of the mountain bike," where many people visit just to hike and bike in the surrounding hills and open space. There are also picnicking areas in several city parks and fishing in the lakes located above Fairfax. One of the most popular hiking areas is Deer Park, which is also an entryway for the roads and trails up to Mt. Tamalpais. If you want more excitement, the art community of Sausalito is just minutes away and San Francisco is just across the bridge. Other nearby places of interest include the picturesque village of Tiburon, Angel Island, Muir Woods, Stinson Beach, Mt. Tamalpais State Park and the Marin Headlands.

The Northern Coast of California, including the areas of Stinson Beach, Mill Valley and Point Reyes Station, is a year-round destination, and its climate is as varied as the geography. Summers are mostly dry all over, with frequent low clouds and morning fog along the coast. Winters along the coast are generally mild. Rain occurs most frequently and heavily October-April, with January being the wettest month. The San Francisco Bay Area can be cool and damp in the summer (due to the fog,) which surprises many visitors. However, just a few miles inland the weather is very different with warmer temperatures and more sunshine. Cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean help keep summer from becoming too hot and winters from being too cold.
