Redlands is a very historical town in southern California, east of Los Angeles, near the San Bernardino National Forest. At one time it was part of what is called the Spanish Mission Lands, but was incorporated into a town in 1888 after many wealthy easterners and mid-westerners took up residence in the community. Agriculture prospered in Redlands with the introduction of the Washington navel orange, and soon the town became known as the “Navel Orange Capital of the World.” Among the things the easterners brought with them to Redlands was their architecture, with many beautiful Victorian homes and buildings still remaining. It has one of the only truly intact and living “turn-of-the-century” neighborhoods in southern California. The city also boasts fine restaurants and shopping and walking tours in its’ historic downtown area. Points of interest include the San Bernardino County Museum, the Historical Glass Museum, the Lincoln Memorial Shrine, the Redlands Bowl, the Edwards Mansion and the Asistencia Mission De San Gabriel. The Kimberly Crest House & Gardens was featured on PBS’s “America’s Castles” series, a French Chateau built in 1897 atop a knoll overlooking the San Bernardino Valley. It is surrounded by more than six acres of terraced gardens.

Redlands Weather & Climate

The mountains east of Los Angeles in the San Bernardino National Forest have weather conditions that vary widely depending on the elevation. The range of elevation goes from 1500 feet at the valley floor to over 11,000 feet at Mt. San Gorgonio. Generally, it is very dry and sunny in the summertime and wildfire is always a threat. In July, the forest usually enters the %u201Cvery high%u201D fire restriction level when no open campfires are allowed and smoking is only within enclosed vehicles. The rainy season begins in October, with January through March being the wettest months. Snow falls in the higher elevations. Weather can change rapidly in the mountains, so visitors are advised to come prepared for a variety of conditions.
