Palomar Mountain
is the site of a small community and state park, located in the San Diego area of southern California. In contrast to the dry lowlands, Palomar Mountain is one of the few places in southern California where the climate is more similar to that of the high Sierra-Nevada Mountains region – it receives more rain than surrounding areas, and is covered with Coniferous forests. These conditions makes it perfect for growing grapes, and a winery is located on the mountain that offers wine-tasting to visitors. Palomar Mountain State Park has picnicking and year-round camping, excellent hiking and biking trails and fishing in Doane Pond. The Welk Resort Center offers a dinner theater, pool, tennis courts, two golf courses and a shopping pavilion. Be sure to visit the world famous Palomar Observatory, located at the 5,500 foot level on the mountaintop. As large as the Parthenon in Rome, the Palomar Observatory, which is open year round, daily from 9-4, is home to the historic Hale 200-inch telescope and has a museum and offers telescope viewing. Palomar Mountain community is also host to several events during the year, including an Annual Barbecue and Raffle in September and a Chili Cook Off, Ice Cream Freeze-Off and Horseshoe Tournament in July. Palomar Mountain State Park is about 35 miles from Oceanside off Highway 76.

The mountains and foothills region northeast of San Diego is one of the only places in southern California that enjoys four seasons. At 4000 feet, the elevation, clean air and blue skies add to the overall beauty of the region. Spring is generally mild and wildflowers decorate the backcountry while a profusion of daffodils is evident throughout the small towns of the area. Average summer temperatures fall in the 80s with occasional summer rains July through August. Most of the summer, however, you can expect clear, sunny skies and dry weather. The first cold spell of fall begins a profusion of color as the trees prepare for a winter and the first rains begin in October. Expect lots of rain, gentle snowfalls and cool temperatures November through March.
