Lakewood is located in southern Los Angeles County, 23 miles southeast of the city of Los Angeles. The city of Long Beach borders it on the west and south. As of the 2000 census, the population of Lakewood was 79,345. Several major thoroughfares run through the city, including CA/SR 19 and the San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605,) making it very convenient to visiting all of southern California’s major attractions. Lakewood is sometimes called an “instant city,” due to how quickly it grew from being nothing but lima bean fields in the 1950s to a well-developed city in the 1960s. The city puts on quite a show with its Fourth of July Block Party and Fireworks Extravaganza, which features live music, kids’ activities, lots of good food and a beverage garden, and evening fireworks over the Lakewood Center Mall. The town is also home to the three-day Pan American Festival held in Mayfair Park in May and a Summer Concerts in the Park Series. Weekly concerts begin in June and feature a variety of bands that perform under the grove of trees located in Del Valle Park. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and a picnic dinner while they listen to some fantastic music. Lakewood is, of course, just minutes to the Long Beach attractions, including the Shoreline Village on the Waterfront, the Aquarium of the Pacific, miles of white sand beaches and an eclectic array of shopping and dining choices.

The beaches and cities along southern California's Pacific Coast enjoy a Mediterranean-type climate of sunny, warm summers and mild wet winters. The rainy season runs from November through March and usually produces no more than 12 inches of rainfall per year. Due to a stable marine layer, any type of precipitation is rare between May and October. The average annual humidity is 64.7 and the average year round temperature is 62 degrees. In summer, temperatures rarely exceed 85 degrees. In the morning and evening there are often strong ocean breezes. In summer, low clouds and fog along the coast give way to sunshine by early afternoon. Frost occurs in the area less than once every ten years.
