Alta
is a small community located off Interstate 80 in the Sierra Nevada foothills region of northern California. This is a pristine area of fresh air, tall pines, fabulous mountain views, crystal clear lakes and rivers. Alta is very close to the gold mining towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City, and is approximately an hour south of Lake Tahoe and one hour north of Sacramento. This is a wonderful area to get out and drive and explore the many small gold rush towns of the northern foothills, little villages with interesting names like Dutch Flat, Towle, You Bet and Red Dog. Rent a country cottage next to the Tahoe National Forest and spend your time fishing and boating, rafting or kayaking in the nearby American, Truckee or Yuba Rivers. Alta is just a short thirty minute drive to major ski resorts like Sugar Bowl and Boreal Ridge for downhill and cross country skiing, sledding, snowboarding and snowmobiling. Other activities in the nearby area include hiking, biking, rock climbing, horseback riding and golf. The nearby town of Grass Valley is filled with shopping and dining opportunities, and the entire town of Nevada City is on the National Register of Historic Places. For relaxation and privacy, Alta can't be beat. It's near enough to the casinos and other entertainment of the Lake Tahoe to easily visit, yet far enough away for seclusion.

The Gold Rush Country in the Sierra Nevada foothills of northern California enjoys four seasons. Although not as pronounced as the seasons in the eastern U.S., they are distinct. Summers are warm and dry, with pleasant temperatures and not the extreme heat of the lower valley regions. Autumn has mild days and crisp, cool nights and the leaves take on the hues of gold, yellow and purple. Winters are mild during the day with cold temperatures at night. Occasionally snow falls at these elevations, but rarely sticks for more than a few hours. Cool rainy days are the normal winter weather pattern, with the rainy season running November through March. Spring is delightful as the days lengthen and wildflowers spread over the hills.
