Westport
is a tiny community with sweeping ocean and mountain views located on the remote Mendocino Coast in northern California. The Westport-Union Landing State Beach is located on Highway 1 near the town of Westport and features fishing, picnicking, hiking and camping. It's also a popular spot for abalone divers. Nearby Van Damme State Park consists of 1,831 acres of beach and upland, and features the Fern Canyon Scenic Trail System that meanders along a fern-carpeted canyon of the Little River. The park also contains a fascinating pygmy forest where mature, cone-bearing cypress and pine trees stand six inches to eight feet tall. Another interesting feature of the park is a unique "Cabbage Patch," where skunk cabbage grows in abundance. This park is approximately three miles south of the town of Mendocino, which also makes a nice day trip from Westport. Mendocino is known for its art galleries, quaint shops and restaurants. Other area attractions include the Skunk Train in Fort Bragg, the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, and the Redwoods/Drive-Thru Tree and nearby wineries. Westport is also a short drive to the "Lost Coast," which is 80 miles of rugged, unspoiled coastline backed by redwood forests. The town of Westport is approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes from San Francisco.

The rugged northern Pacific Coast, north of the San Francisco Bay Area, experiences a mild climate year round. There is very little variation in temperature from winter, spring, summer and fall. Summers are dry, but typically cool and foggy right along the coast. Further inland, near the Anderson Valley, temperatures will be warmer with more sunny days. Be advised that it can be in the 60s in the Mendocino coast area, and just 30 miles inland the temperature can be in the 90s. Cool ocean breezes and a thick marine layer helps moderate coastal temperatures. If visiting during wintertime, there is a good chance it will rain during your stay. November through March are the wettest months. Fall is generally the sunniest time along the northern Pacific Coast.
