Squaw-Valley is a sprawling mountain village in the high Sierra Nevada Mountains of northern California that evolved as a direct consequence of hosting the 1960 Olympics (and not to be confused with the town of Squaw Valley further south near the city of Fresno.) The Reno Tahoe International Airport is 42 miles away, and Squaw Valley is just 6 miles from the north shore of Lake Tahoe and 8 miles to the mountain town of Truckee. There are several services and shops in the village, along with an assortment of restaurants and cafes. Of course, Squaw Valley is most well known for being the home of a championship ski resort with 4,000 acres of world famous terrain. Squaw Valley USA is situated at the end of a spectacular alpine valley cradled by six High Sierra peaks, and has become one of the most visited winter sports destinations in the country. Squaw Valley offers miles of groomed trails; some of the most advanced lift network in the U.S, including North America's only Funitel and an aerial cable car. It has 2,850 vertical feet of terrain, and sunshine every 3 days out of 4 (which is remarkable considering Squaw Valley receives some of the deepest snow in the world.) Of course, there is more to do in the area than skiing. South Lake Tahoe is only a few miles away and offers much to do, such as a night of gambling and entertainment. It is rare to find an area that is so full of natural beauty, outdoor activities, history and entertainment all within a few miles. Squaw Valley is approximately 96 miles north of Sacramento, and 196 miles from San Francisco along all-weather Interstate 80.

Surrounding areas: Olympic Valley, California (1.5 mi), Alpine Meadows, California (1.6 mi), Tahoe City, California (5.2 mi), Northstar, California (5.6 mi), Tahoe Park, California (5.6 mi), Dollar Point, California (6.9 mi), Tahoe Pines, California (7.6 mi)

Squaw Valley Weather & Climate

The Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, just west of the Nevada state line has an alpine mountain climate. This high mountain region is known as one of the chilliest spots in the country, which comes as a big surprise to many that visit California. Nestled between the Sierra Nevada peaks, the towns of Truckee and Graeagle, and the Donner Lake region, often gets an inversion, whereby cold air is trapped overnight, thus the reason for the extreme cold temperatures in the very early morning hours - even in summertime. As the sun comes up, the temperature begins to rise and daytime highs are usually quite pleasant. Large amounts of snow are received in the higher elevations of the Sierras - up to 40 feet. Rain is possible any month of the year, although most occurs October through April. Mountain weather conditions can change quickly, and rain in the lower elevations can mean snow, sleet or ice in the higher elevations.
