Rio del Mar
is a small community located on a wide strip of beach near the town of Santa Cruz on the central coast of California. It is within the unincorporated region of Santa Cruz County that includes the towns of Seascape, Seacliff, Cabrillo and Aptos, as well as Rio del Mar. This is a gorgeous region of the state – an area of beaches and redwoods, canyons and hills, horse ranches, wineries and apple orchards. The Rio del Mar Beach is open from sunrise to sunset and has lifeguards on duty in the summertime. Other activities in the area include hiking and biking, golf, tennis, fishing, boating, sailing, surfing, windsurfing and shelling. The small village of Rio del Mar is home to the Pacific Garden Mall, which is the center of the town’s retail, art and business district. The University of California is located nearby, and other attractions include the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary, the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and Santa Cruz Mission State Park, the Aptos Cement Ship and the sea lion at Ana Nuevo. Rio del Mar offers a peaceful charm in the middle of a popular vacation area. At dusk, a drive in the hills is recommended for the view of the twinkling lights of the valley, Santa Cruz and the other cities beyond.

The Central Pacific Coast, between San Francisco and the Monterey Bay, enjoys a mild, Mediterranean type climate. It can be cloudy and damp in the wintertime but spring through fall is sunny, warm and dry %u2013 perfect for enjoying the area%u2019s beaches. This region that is at the northern tip of the Monterey Bay does not experience much variation in daytime temperatures, but nights are generally cooler in winter than in summer. The rainy season runs late October through early April, with the rest of the year experiencing only a trace of precipitation. Early morning fog is common along the coast in the summertime, due to warm air moving across the cool waters of the Pacific Ocean. Due to very dry conditions in summer, wildfire is always a threat in the forested mountain regions and in winter, mudslides can occur on mountain roads when lots of rain is received over a period of a few days.
