Kirkwood is a tiny community in rustic Alpine County in northern California. The town is known more for its surroundings and ski resort than for the town itself. It's located 30 minutes south of Lake Tahoe along scenic Highway 88. With one of the smallest populations of all the counties in California, most of the population in Alpine County is centered on four mountain communities: Markleeville, Woodfords, Bear Valley and Kirkwood. It's a very rural area, but the surrounding counties have larger cities with more shopping and other conveniences. High snow-covered peaks, alpine meadows, beautiful forests and crystal clear streams are what you'll find here. The Kirkwood Ski Resort has 2,300 acres of wide-open terrain, with gentle slopes, all the way up to steep mountain chutes. The park offers learn-to-ski programs and a children's center, a snowboard center, cross-country skiing and horse drawn sleigh rides. In summer, there's horseback riding, mountain biking, nature hiking and a rock-climbing wall. Kirkwood is also located near a golf course and several lakes for swimming, fishing and boating. One of the most scenic ways to reach Kirkwood is from Sacramento on State Route 16 East to California Highway 49 South and then East on Highway 88, (approximately a two and a half-hour drive.) This way is also usually less congested than taking U.S. Highway 50 from Sacramento to CA Highway 89. Be sure to check ahead for weather conditions on Highway 88 before traveling in winter.

Kirkwood Weather & Climate

The Sierra Nevada Mountains of Central California has a distinct four-season climate. Winter in the higher elevations (near Kirkwood Ski Resort) generally runs from mid-November to late April, with up to 500 inches of snowfall each year. At 7,800 feet, Kirkwood has the highest base elevation of all the Northern California ski resorts, so this is an area very popular with winter sports enthusiasts. In the lower foothills region, winter is the rainy season and rarely sees snow flurries. Summer, in contrast, is usually hot and dry, with periods of rain. Sometimes, especially after a prolonged hot spell, thunderstorms at the higher elevations may become quite severe. Fall is mild with sunny days and cool nights, and spring weather can be unstable with both rain and wind, or mild, sunny days.
