Willits
is located on U.S. Highway 101 approximately 140 miles north of San Francisco, on the banks of the South Fork of the Van Duzen River near Eel River. Its a small rural town with a rich history, surrounded by rolling hills and picturesque ranches. Willits is the eastern terminus of the famous "Skunk Train," which takes visitors on a ride from the seaside town of Fort Bragg for 40 miles through the giant Redwoods, over bridges and trestles and through a mountain tunnel before reaching Willits. Other attractions in town include the Mendocino County Museum, and the annual Willits Frontier Days, which is a major 4th of July event that boasts being "The Oldest Continuous Rodeo in the State of California." Willits is centrally located in the "heart" of Mendocino County, and makes a good base for a north coast vacation. Day trips will easily take you to the villages of Mendocino and Fort Bragg, to the ancient "Avenue of the Giants" Redwood Forests, to the award-winning wineries of The Anderson Valley, or whale watching along the coast. Recreational activities in the area include golf, biking, hiking, horseback riding, fishing and cross-country skiing. The town of Willits is easily reached on U.S. Highway 101, north of the city of Santa Rosa between the towns of Garberville and Ukiah.

Willits Weather & Climate

The rugged northern Pacific Coast, north of the San Francisco Bay Area, experiences a mild climate year round. There is very little variation in temperature from winter, spring, summer and fall. Summers are dry, but typically cool and foggy right along the coast. Further inland, near the Anderson Valley, temperatures will be warmer with more sunny days. Be advised that it can be in the 60s in the Mendocino coast area, and just 30 miles inland the temperature can be in the 90s. Cool ocean breezes and a thick marine layer helps moderate coastal temperatures. If visiting during wintertime, there is a good chance it will rain during your stay. November through March are the wettest months. Fall is generally the sunniest time along the northern Pacific Coast.
