Smith-River is located in the northwestern corner of California, just six miles from the Oregon border. The Smith River is included in the National Wild and Scenic River System, with more than 300 miles of the river designated as wild and scenic. This is more than any other river in the country! The Smith River National Recreational Area has 450 miles of forests, rocky canyons, creeks and streams, remote wilderness and lakes. Winter rains turn the creeks and canyons in this region into gushing waterfalls and white water streams and wildflowers are abundant. Pacific Dogwoods, azaleas and rhododendrons dot the landscape. Fall is just as beautiful when the hills and forests turn into a kaleidoscope of color. Kayaking and fishing are two of the most popular sports along the Smith River, but there is also swimming and snorkeling, tubing and rafting, hiking in the backcountry, mountain biking and camping. There are 75 miles of hiking trails inside the Smith River Recreational Area, as well as 27 miles of scenic highway along the Smith River Scenic Byway. Smith River is located inside Del Norte County and other highlights include exploring the spectacular Redwood forests, beachcombing and jet boats and ocean tours. Nearby attractions include Oceanworld, Trees of Mystery and Oregon Caverns.

Smith River Weather & Climate

Northwest California near the Smith River and the Oregon border has a cool weather climate year round. Summer temperatures are normally around the 65-degree mark, and rarely exceed 80 degrees. Unlike many other parts of the state, rain can be expected almost any month of the year, although the official rainy season runs October through March or early April. The average annual rainfall is 75 inches per year. Located near the Pacific Ocean, this region frequently experiences low clouds and fog right along the coastline, with clearing the further inland you travel. The same cool, ocean mists that nurture the giant redwoods of the region provide relief for visitors who come to the area to escape the summer heat of the interior valleys.
