Blythe is a town of approximately 8,400 people, located on the California-Arizona border where I-10 crosses the Colorado River. The town's economy is based on agriculture and tourism, with the population swelling considerably in the winter months when visitors come here to escape the cold and snow in other states. Although it's extremely hot in Blythe in the summertime, it's still busy and a popular center for water sports on the Colorado River. Blythe is also a very historic place, beginning centuries ago when prehistoric peoples created gigantic figures along the Colorado River known to archaeologists as "Intaglios." They have become known as the Blythe Geoglyphs and archaeological dating suggests them to be around 1100 years old. An English developer, Thomas Blythe, first came here in 1877 and established water rights along the Colorado River, and the town incorporated in 1916. Modern irrigation methods have turned the area into a rich farming valley. Recreational sports in Blythe include fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, rafting and water skiing on the river. Activities on dry land are also numerous, such as hiking and rock climbing, horseback riding, treasure hunting, biking, wildlife viewing and photography and off-road auto touring.

Blythe Weather & Climate

A dry climate with very hot summers and beautiful winters describes the weather of southern California's desert regions. Located just west the Arizona State line, the area surrounding the town of Blythe is one of the hottest and driest places in the state. For instance, in the summer, it can have highs in excess of 110 degrees. Winters, by comparison, are very mild with cool evenings. Summer is a dry period, although occasionally moist air drifts northward from the Gulf of Mexico or the Gulf of California and creates scattered, locally heavy showers. What rain that does occur in the wintertime is usually between the months of January through March. People who enjoy outdoors sports are attracted to southern California's warm winters and abundance of sunny days.
